Making fun of yourself!

Updated: Apr 23, 2019

In a most delightful way!

Do you take yourself just a little too seriously? Most of us do. We think that what we think, what we believe and what we feel (emotionally and physically) is significant, unique to us, and therefore very special. And I’m certainly not going to be the one to suggest it’s not. But what if you did? What if you could see the humor in your life experiences? Do you think life might just get a little easier? A little more fun?

If you’re open to giving it a try, here’s some ways you might be able to play with yourself (yes, I said that):

  1. Turn the disturbing thought into a song (using a familiar tune from childhood works well)

  2. Use a little sarcasm with yourself (e.g. “really, Melanie, I’m sure you are the only person on the planet to have ever felt this way”).

  3. Bounce the thoughts in your mind’s eye, or physically bounce your body (it’s almost impossible to hold onto a thought while bouncing).

  4. Play with letting the feeling get really big or really small, like a wave on the ocean.

  5. Put the thought, feeling or sensation into movement and try on the opposite movement. Then go back and forth between the two multiple times.

  6. Physically step to the side of the thought, feeling or sensation.

  7. Imagine putting the thought on a merry-go-round and watch it spin from a distance.

  8. If you’re angry, give yourself permission to throw a fit in the privacy of your own space.

Just a few of the ways to create some space for yourself. I suggest you pick one(or more) and try it out. You might find, as Mikey did, you like it!

Please share your results and any ideas you might want to add to this list.
