Chiropractic Care and Depression

By Dr. Tricia Shaar, DC, DACNB

Most people experience depression to some degree in their lives, and approximately 30% are diagnosed with clinical depression at one time or another. Emotions, such as fear, anxiety, anger and loneliness, have been shown to affect the immune system, reducing natural killer cell activity and antibody production. Depending on the severity and the longevity of the case, your body tension, chemistry and immune system will be affected. Chiropractic can help with the physical heaviness, tightness, headaches, body aches, pain, numbness, tingling that comes with a tense body, weak immune system, chronic body holding pattern, and over all fatigue, that often defines depression.

Chiropractic sees the body as a naturally healthy system. Along with its mechanical structure of bones, joints, and muscles, the body has a power source, lubrications, and wiring. The key to the system is the brain by way of the spine, which links it to the rest of the body through nerves and controls everything. Any distortion to the spine affects other parts or systems of the body including end organs. Some of these end organs are the parts of the body that we feel when we are sore, tight, and in pain. It also affects parts of the body we can’t feel, our lymphatic, immune, and circulatory systems that help our body stay healthy. By taking the tension off the spine and surrounding areas of the spine, communication is improved between the brain and the body. The body will adapt better to the activities of daily living and will feel and move better, which most agree, is an essential component to lifting depression.
