Coronavirus-what we know and what to do
As of this writing 82,721 cases of Coronavirus and 2,817 deaths have been reported worldwide (www.worldometers.info/coronavirus). While panic is not recommended, we do believe taking action to protect your health would be wise at this time.
What is Coronavirus?
On February 11, 2020 the World Health Organization announced an official name for the disease that is causing the 2019 novel coronavirus outbreak, first identified in Wuhan China. The new name of this disease is coronavirus disease 2019, abbreviated as COVID-19.
There are many types of human coronaviruses including some that commonly cause mild upper-respiratory tract illnesses. COVID-19 is a new disease, caused by a novel (or new) coronavirus that has not previously been seen in humans. It is believed to have been transmitted from animals to humans (which is pretty rare) but now is passed from person to person.
What are the symptoms?
Current symptoms reported include mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. That said, reports and severity of symptoms vary widely, from no symptoms (which does not mean the disease won't progress and potentially result in death) to very severe. The disease spreads quickly, and while the vast majority of cases are still in China, there are reported cases in many countries, including the United States. Italy has quarantined 11 towns and world health organizations are saying there is a definite pandemic possibility.
Who's at Risk?
While everyone is potentially at risk, those believed to be at highest risk are smokers, the elderly, and others with compromised immune systems. There are other indicators including race and certain genetic markers, but there is still a lot unknown.
Treatment and Recovery
Studies are on-going and treatment is evolving, but so far, positive outcomes are being reported from Traditional Chinese Medicine.
