Baby and You- Health Before, During and After Pregnancy
We all know that once we choose to bring a child into the world, our lives are forever changed. Sleepless nights, high school drama, college tuition and so much more. What we sometimes fail to recognize is that the giving starts even before we officially meet the new one. A fetus takes what it needs nutritionally from mom. One of the main nutrients needed for development is the essential fatty acid DHA, which is a large structural component of the brain. It is not made by the body and must be consumed or ingested from food and/or supplements. When the baby takes mom’s DHA, it is easy for mom to become depleted. In extreme cases, mom may not have sufficient levels of DHA for the baby, putting the baby’s development at risk.
Post-partum depression and suicide have been linked to low levels of DHA in new moms. In addition, low DHA levels can cause headaches, fatigue, diarrhea, dryness, attention deficit disorder, irritability, chronic depression and nervousness.
All of the above conditions are worsened by stress (and as soon as we figure out how to bring a child into the world with no stress, we’ll write the book). We have found that one of the stress factors for moms is not knowing what is or isn’t okay to take or do during pregnancy. Working with a trusted practitioner can save your mental and physical health and ease the baby’s entry into the world.
